Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup butter (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 23 tbsp milk (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Red food coloring (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
  9. Once cakes are cooled, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake.
  10. Add red food coloring to some frosting for decorative accents if desired.

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • Ensure cakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Decorate with fresh strawberries or edible flowers for extra romance.
