- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 cup butter (for frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
- 2–3 tbsp milk (for frosting)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- Red food coloring (optional, for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Stir in boiling water. The batter will be thin.
- Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
- Once cakes are cooled, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake.
- Add red food coloring to some frosting for decorative accents if desired.
Notes
- For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
- Ensure cakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
- Decorate with fresh strawberries or edible flowers for extra romance.
